Elsie Riach Murray (1861-1932) was a lecturer and the first
Vice-Principal of the Maria Grey Training College in London. She
was a highly respected Froebelian scholar, educator and author,
whose works included The Child Under Eight and A Story of Infant
Schools and Kindergartens.
E. R. Murray’s 1914 work examines the key elements of Froebel’s
ground-breaking Kindergarten philosophy and how it predated and
contributed to the field of Psychology. The book offers an
important review of the scientific merits of Froebel’s work,
answering criticisms that Froebel’s work was merely based on
Romantic philosophy.
This log out-of-print work is important to those studying child
development and the history of Child Psychology. It provides a
framework for understanding Froebel’s method and the original
concept of Kindergarten.
